Extreme Heat Warning Stays In Effect Over Bloomington Until 9 PM Thursday

TLDR: The National Weather Service has Hennepin County under an Extreme Heat Warning through 9 PM Thursday, with heat index values expected to hit 100 and little cooldown overnight.

National Weather ServiceExtreme Heat Warning for the Bloomington area

NWS Twin Cities/Chanhassen has Bloomington under an Extreme Heat Warning that runs until 9 PM Thursday, July 17. It's the latest extension of a warning the office has kept renewing since Tuesday night, first issuing an Extreme Heat Warning at 10:32 PM Tuesday, then again Wednesday morning at 1:04 AM and afternoon at 3:42 AM, before the current alert went out early Thursday at 1:04 AM.

The warning covers Hennepin County and puts heat index values around 100 degrees, per NWS. That combination of air temperature and humidity is what makes it a warning rather than a lesser advisory — and it's stuck around long enough that the office has been re-upping it roughly every 12 to 24 hours since Tuesday.

Overnight lows aren't offering much of a break either, according to the alert, which is part of why NWS kept the warning running straight through the nighttime hours instead of letting it lapse after sunset.

The warning is set to expire at 9 PM Thursday. Given how many times NWS has already extended it this week, it's worth checking weather.gov/mpx again Thursday evening before assuming the heat has broken.
