New Six-Week Workshop at The Works Museum Invites Bloomington Artists to Cross Disciplines

TLDR: Registration has closed for "One Thousand and One Thresholds," the city's 6-session art workshop at The Works Museum. It is capped at 12 participants and set to end October 27, with guest artists including photographer Wing Young Huie.

The city's new cross-disciplinary art workshop is past the sign-up stage. Registration for "One Thousand and One Thresholds: Community Through Art" closed Friday, September 18, the city said. The series is limited to 12 participants and is scheduled to hold its last Tuesday session on October 27 at The Works Museum.

The city's Creative Placemaking department announced the series in early August. It runs 6 Tuesday evenings, September 22 through October 27, 2026, from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at the museum, 9740 Grand Ave. S. The pitch was deliberately broad. Writers, dancers, musicians, visual artists, performers and other creative thinkers were all welcome, and the city framed the series around process, collaboration and discovery across disciplines rather than a single medium.

Rupa Shenoy-Thadhani leads the series. She is a Bloomington-based poet and interdisciplinary artist, and the city also lists her as a philologist, educator and Loft Mentor Fellow. She isn't teaching alone. The city's event page names 4 more teaching artists. Miré Regulus is a writer, performance artist and community builder whose work focuses on equity and embodied practice. Heather Meyer is an improv performer and instructor with an MFA in playwriting. Wing Young Huie is a photographer who has spent 50 years documenting American cultural life and received the 2018 McKnight Distinguished Artist Award. Ritika Ganguly is a composer and cultural anthropologist who works with music, storytelling and collective listening.

According to the city, each session mixes guest-led practices, embodiment exercises, independent creative work and group reflection. Capping enrollment at 12 keeps the room small enough that a poet and a percussionist can actually swap notes.

Registration for all 6 sessions cost $185 for residents and $200 for nonresidents. The city offered a limited number of scholarships to applicants who got their requests in by August 22.

If you missed this round and want to hear about future offerings, contact the Creative Placemaking office at 952-563-8744 or placemaking@BloomingtonMN.gov.
