Colleague AI: Bloomington schools approve teacher pilot

TLDR: The ISD 271 board has approved a deal to put the Colleague AI platform in front of a small group of Bloomington teachers. A University of Washington research center will study whether it does anything for student learning.

Bloomington Public Schools is about to test whether an AI assistant can help its teachers in a way students actually feel. On Oct. 26, the ISD 271 school board approved a partnership with Colleague AI Inc. and a University of Washington center to roll out the Colleague AI platform with a small group of teachers. The research side of the deal matters most: the study will look at whether using the platform is tied to measurable gains in student learning.

Colleague AI is a spin-off of a University of Washington research center that was funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences and by the National Science Foundation. It sells itself as a working partner for educators, with AI assistants for lesson planning, building assessments, grading and differentiated instruction. The company says it now serves thousands of educators nationwide and has also released a version for students.

The resolution the board passed names Colleague AI Inc. and the AmplifyLearn.AI Center at the University of Washington. It authorizes district administration to sign an agreement that offers, implements and studies the platform and its related services.

Here's where things stand: the agreement is approved, and the pilot is meant to stay small. It's limited to a handful of teachers, not a districtwide rollout. The sources available so far don't say which schools or subjects are included, how many teachers will take part, what it costs, or when results will come back. Those are the questions to watch as the study gets going. If the research finds real gains, expect a bigger conversation about expanding it. If it doesn't, Bloomington will at least have local data in a debate that mostly runs on vendor promises.

The board's next regular meeting is Nov. 23, and it has added a business meeting on Dec. 14.
